Back in March, the Swoosh further invested in the talents of the WNBA, providing New York Liberty point guard Sabrina Ionescu her very own signature shoe: the Nike Sabrina 1. And though still a few weeks shy of its debut, Sneaker News was fortunate enough to catch an in-person look at the silhouette’s upcoming “Magnetic” colorway, which is expected to release later this year.
The Nike Sabrina 1 is built with the brand’s premier technologies, featuring a top-loaded Zoom Air Unit in the forefoot and full-length React cushioning. A stabilizing shank helps maintain balance, while the midfoot band and lockdown cables keep the player secured over the footbed. In addition to this utility, the signature also helps tell Ionescu’s story: the shoe’s intricate weaves pay homage to her heritage, referencing traditional Romanian art and architecture; the dotted “i” that wraps from the outsole up the heel acts as a tribute to her last name; and the slanted Swoosh on the medial represents the barriers the athlete broke throughout her career.
Many of the above-mentioned details are given a much brighter spotlight on the Nike Sabrina 1 “Magnetic.” Though it may start similar to the colorway revealed back in March — opting for a white-dominant foundation — this pair highlights many an element in black, visually bringing forth several of the sneaker’s nods to Ionescu herself.
