The New Balance 2002R has toned down its stream of releases since reaching its height of resurgence in 2022. While the “dad shoe” trend continues to permeate, the Boston-based brand is providing a vintage touch to its staple lifestyle runner.
Each pair replaces its mesh forefoot and quarter base layer with leather paneling for a clad forefoot construction while the heel counter and collar assume suede and mesh toolings respectively. Exposed mesh at the lace loop and upper tongue imbue an accent of vintage aesthetics alongside the gum treads underfoot. Draped in green, burgundy and grey tones, the late 2010 revision pairs supple cream-white contrasts along the midsole, profile N logos, tongue, rope laces and soft collar lining of the green and wine-red options.
Dark grey supporting overlays and upper eyelets provide a darkened contrast to the colored-in pairs while the third offering resides nearly exclusively in greyscale tones. Jet-blacks inject further darkened allure within the N insignias, connecting leather panels and heel.
