Jared Ebanks For the past four years, Nike has remained committed to empowering and uplifting the various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country through its Yardrunners program. Supporting each community’s global contributions to sport and culture through scholarships, homecoming activations and co-created products, the fourth inaugural Yardrunners Class brings with them five specially crafted Nike Terminator Highs.
Ranging from athletes like Tennessee State alum and Los Angeles Clippers forward Robert Covington to artists such as Bowie State graduate Foggie Raw, the Yardrunners 4.0 Class embodies the theme of “Draft Day” by celebrating the post-campus accomplishments of HBCU graduates.
In total five institutions lay claim to the circa 1985 hardwood staple – Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Alabama A&M and Tennessee State. Varying between leather and suede accents, the high-top models are clothed in the presiding school’s founding year at the lateral forefoot while mascot insignias and seals stamp the tongue tabs. Aside from the hymn-printed laces and tiger strips, the vision of past alumni also appears readily throughout each model, such as the all-out homage to Slim and Husky’s Pizza Beeria on the Tennessee State effort – a local Nashville pizza chain founded by TSU graduates.
Drawing an ostensible connection to Homecoming Weekend, expect the Yardrunners 4.0 Terminator High collection to be released throughout the month in accordance with each school’s scheduled festivities. In the meantime, the ensemble of colorways can be seen in official imagery ahead.
