Matt Varga The adidas SL72, a shoe that represents a true watershed moment for the Three Stripes as they were adopted everywhere by global athletes, is finally returning to shelves. Unveiled in a brief stint in their most famous red, white and blue launch colorway, the sneakers return on March 28th in six pieces, three OG and three brand new.
Taken alongside traditional adidas style principles, what stands out most about the SL72 is its stacked sole, striated into three seperate parts and concluded with a ridged rubber outsole. That run of texture continues to the tongue, where its raised structure provides a switch up for typically flat adidas branding.
In the first half of the collection, pairs in “Blue,” “Utility Yellow” and “Green” tap into the shoes history, each of them having released many decades ago when the model as a whole first was introduced. The second half, featuring the “Collegiate Green,” “Night Indigo,” and “Maroon” is where the Three Stripes are spreading their wings, adorning the retro running shoe in never-before-seen designs. As one final note, is the first three editions will arrive in men’s sizing, while the latter three will arrive in women’s.
Importantly, the news of the SL72’s comeback arrives extremely close to the announcement of the Bob Marley adidas expected to release this summer. This more widely available capsule of the sneakers employs more traditional colorblocking, but goes in more experimental directions with their color palettes.
