Original article published June 4th, 2024: Though Kobe shoes have always been a hot commodity, few true performance colorways have broken out in the meteoric fashion the Nike Kobe 6 Grinch has. Widely adopted by casual hoopers and NBA professionals from Jalen Brunson to Anthony Davis, the neon colorway sits atop the basketball shoes world by a wide, wide margin. While a true retro would guarantee wild success by tapping into that demand, Beaverton creatives have their eyes set on a different demographic entirely, with plans to release the Nike Kobe 6 “Grinch” as a football cleat this Holiday season.
At the time of writing, only a model title and color names are official. However, drawing from previously released “cleat-ified” Nike offerings, the upper will likely remain true to the original shoe. Similar “Vapor Edge” editions of the Air Jordan 4 and Air Jordan 11 saved the most radical changes for the lower half, transforming the midsoles of either while tacking on traction spikes underfoot.
Notably, there’s some already existing demand and precedent that this cleated version will tap into. Odell Beckham, Ceedee Lamb, Jalen Mills and Miles Sanders are among those who have rocked Kobe cleats customs on game day, the latter two Eagles specifically commissioning “Grinch” editions on their own accord.
