Pharrell Debuts New adidas Superstar Cuts At Paris Fashion Week

Updated June 20th, 2024: Pharrell has unveiled not one but three new adidas Superstar variants at Paris Fashion Week. Making their first public appearance on the Louis Vuitton runway, where Pharrell is men’s creative director, the new Superstar 72, 82, and 92 are inspired by the evolution of fashion trends throughout three different eras.

The Superstar 72, flaunted here by Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant, boasts a thin rubber sole inspired by the sleek tooling of 1970s footwear. Meanwhile, the Superstar 82 stays close to the modern cut with some hidden changes. On top of a slightly re-worked shape, fabric padding is removed from the interior. The Superstar 82 has actually been out for a while already, but helps bridge the gap between the three pairs on display nonetheless.

Concluding the slate, the Superstar 92 stands out as the most notable of the trio. Simply put; everything gets blown up in size to comprise a look inspired by chunky 90s skate shoes. Fueling anticipation for the drop, Pusha-T, Helen Williams, and Rocket Williams all wore pairs at the event.

All three versions were previewed in simple black and white colorways, although they appear to come with as many as five colorful lace sets. Additionally, images posted by Pharrell’s @skateboard account reveal special packaging with odes to Virginia, the artist’s home state.

We’ve yet to hear of a release date for any of the newly unveiled adidas Suprstar cuts, so return to our Sneaker Release Dates page while we populate all the latest info as it emerges. In the meantime, enjoy detailed images of each pair below and find our initial Superstar 92 preview in-tact after that.

The adidas Superstar 92 aka “Double Wide” is a dramatic re-imagination of the original Superstar, inspired by chunky 90s skate shoes and snowboarding boots. Detailed images posted by Complex showcase thick padding, a fat tongue, oversized stripes, and most notably; a re-tooled shell toe to boot. Making its first online appearance in familiar black and white makeup, we also see different “Superstar” typography on the quarter and blue laces.

Whether through Pharrell or other A-list collaborators like Clot, adidas has been pumping out unique overhauls like crazy. Arriving hot off the heels of the newly surfaced Clot x adidas Dress Superstar, this latest preview exemplifies adidas’ continued embrace of outside-the-box design choices. But that’s not to say the Superstar 92 isn’t informed by well-documented fashion trends. Look no further than the success of the adidas Campus 00s and it becomes clear that leaning fully into 90s skate aesthetics is a safe bet.

Release information for the adidas Superstar 92 is still pending, but know that our Sneaker Release Dates page will be kept current with all the latest details. In the meantime, enjoy detailed images of the shoes below.
