Original article published June 20th, 2024: Though only a few shoes in, Jae Tips – Saucony is emerging as one of the sturdier relationships in the running world. After delivering two standout collections last year with the Grid Shadow 2 “What’s The Occasion” and “Jae Tips’ First Shoe,” the Grid Azura 2000, they’re continuing to strike while the iron’s hot. Tips took to social media earlier to showcase our very first images of his upcoming Saucony Matrix collab.
Given the multi-color palettes that have draped both of those aforementioned link-ups, the majority of this shoe being taken up by coral & burgundy makes for a relatively conservative profile. However, chrome line-work on the toe-box, reflected on the side Three Stones logo imbue the shoe with eye-catching appeal all the same. Even if it isn’t as eccentric at first glance, the texture of the Saucony Matrix model generally makes this a standout pair, from the wavy sole unit to the texture quarter panel to the chain-link tongue.
A rather subterranean model in the Saucony catalog, this is arguably the Matrix’s first ever appearance as a lifestyle/streetwear proposition, previously a 2000s trail runner largely forgotten to time. Of course, that descriptor means it can see some pretty instant success in this renewed run, following in the footsteps of other revived curios like the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 or New Balance 1906R.
