Andrew Rizzo New Balance has been hitting all the right notes since it re-entered the basketball shoe market in 2018. The Boston brand has amassed an applaudable roster of talent that now includes the consensus #1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Cooper Flagg, and while Kawhi Leonard owns the only signature New Balance basketball shoe to date, the Fresh Foam BB and TWO WXY series both have a laundry list of ambassadors.
With the WNBA season winding down and NBA season ramping up over the coming months, New Balance is capitalizing on consumer’s attention by releasing the fifth installment of the TWO WXY series on September 13th. Seen here via first look images courtesy of Asphalt Gold, the TWO WXY V5 differs significantly from its predecessors. Eyes are first drawn to the back of the shoe, which stands out by way of a protruded, oval-shaped structure that hosts New Balance branding. The midsole portion underneath opts for a topographic pattern a la Fresh Foam BB, while a layer of TPU curves upwards from the side profile around the rear.
Meanwhile, the upper features a single layer of mesh that’s somewhat caged in by the TPU for stability. Performance specs haven’t been revealed yet, but consistent with previous versions, hoopers can most definitely expect Fresh Foam X and FuelCell cushioning. This “Blast Red” colorway makes use of red, orange, and blue accents, but black and white treatments account for the bulk of the design.
New Balance athletes Jamal Murray, Tyrese Maxey, and Dejounte Murray all wear TWO WXY sneakers, but it’s likely the TWO WXY V5 will make its on-court debut on WNBA hardwood. Cameron Brink of the Los Angeles Sparks has been wearing the V4 throughout the 2024 season, so it’s possible she’ll be among the first few to break out the new model sometime this month.
