New Balance has simultaneously been one of the biggest drivers and beneficiaries of the tech runner wave. The Boston brand has a deep archive of retro styles to pull from, and they’ve done so to much acclaim, with cuts like the New Balance 1906R and 2002R standing tall as some of the most sought-after shoes of the moment. Encouraged by the warm reception consumers have given those models, New Balance is bringing back the 740 in a storm of fresh colorways for 2024 and 2025.
To the uninitiated; the New Balance 740 was originally released in the early 2010s and made little buzz upon entering the market. The shoe sees several big changes for its first retro effort, mainly a more streamlined midsole. Aesthetically speaking, the upper takes after the 1906R with a mesh base and leather overlays, often working in metallics and bright neons so as to keep with the aesthetics of its era.
What’s especially important to note here is the shoe’s retail price. The New Balance 740 clocks in at just $110, positioning itself next to the 530 and non-NB competitors like the ASICS GEL-1130 in a more budget-friendly range. Also boding well is the fact that the 740 is the subject of the next Aminé New Balance collab, a project that’s already garnered considerable hype prior to release.
Currently poised to hit the market in droves, the New Balance 740 has surfaced in a half-dozen colorways releasing throughout 2024 and into 2025.
