Original article published February 11th, 2025: The 1906R has gone from a one-off smash success for the Boston brand to a bonafide empire unto itself, spawning offshoot after offshoot to build on the techy foundation of that parent model. In that crowd, the New Balance 1906A has been the most eye-catching for us, introducing an industrial silhouette that’s almost without comparison in the NB catalog. As its meted introduction continues, a new “Inkwell” New Balance 1906A has now emerged, showcasing a more experimental palette in the process.
In many of its previous looks, Boston’s creatives have kept the shoe to a pretty simplistic script, de-emphasizing color choices in order to let the deconstructed hardware speak for itself. With this “Inkwell” edition, sandwiching the reflective purple between pops of royal blue and deep burgundy at the heel, that concept goes out the window. After those eye-catching accents, the shoe remains in easily digestible territory, cooking up a neutral foundation of a pure white base, dark grey overlays and a faux-aged sole. Finally, we should note that this multi-color affair mirrors a couple of 1906R looks, perhaps a sign that the 1906A will take after its predecessor as new colorways continue to hit the market.
