Matt Varga As cited by us, plenty of other outlets, and even StockX’s hard data, ANTA was one of the true footwear winners of 2024, in no small part due to the breakout success of the KAI 1. Irving’s initial offering quickly spun into three distinct silhouettes under his banner, joining his signature with a lifestyle model and reimagined performance edition. Still, none quieted the anticipation for a bonafide sequel. Now officially unveiled and announced, the ANTA KAI 2 “Artist On Court” arrives at the end of February.
In speaking about his new silhouette, Irving himself states that “no one’s shoes look like this,” and it’s hard to disagree. In broad strokes, you can argue that the maximalist, techy look is comparable to other Chinese brands (PEAK, Rigorer, 361 Degrees), but as always, Kyrie and the ANTA team jam-pack this shoe with storytelling details. Capitalizing on the “Artist on Court” theme, the toe-box pulls from the textured brushstrokes of Fauvism, while the ANTA logo is spun into jagged ridges through the eye-stays and heel counter.
Equally eye-catching is the heel design, showcasing a litany of embroidered icons, including a new interpretation of “KAI” that runs vertically through that section. The outsole also carries through much of that abstract geometry, working in a yin-yang heart and a proud proclamation into its herringbone traction (“I Am My Own Muse, The Descendant Of The Lakota Nation.”)
Finally, the “Artist on Court” colorway mirrors a similar pink and purple-heavy look that kicked off the ANTA KAI 1. For those who may be thrown off by the velveted laces, don’t worry — the model features a dual-lacing system that allows a swap to a more traditional counterpart.
