Matt Varga J-rock outfit ZUTOMAYO is an excellent example of the creative angles with which acts can market themselves in a digital age — the band largely remains nameless, obscures exactly how many members are included, and represent themselves chiefly through frontwoman ACAne, herself often depicted via animated avatar Nira-chan. While we sadly aren’t breaking any details of the band’s true identity, they are somewhat stepping out from behind the curtain via a foray into footwear, with the ZUTOMAYO ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 now revealed.
Given that the band makes heavy use of neon shades in marketing materials and in-person perforamances, it’s no shock that those hues are similarly adopted on these two colorways. The off-white pair particularly mirrors Nira-chan’s digital appearance, copping the highlights in her hair style with flashes of purple and lime green atop that neutral foundation.
You can instead interpret the stealthy GEL-Kayano 14 as an ode to the ZUTOMAYO stage presence, odimming the lights and obscuring the model’s layers with waves of jey black and dark grey, still maintaining trademark energy with purple and dark pink trim. Across either shoe, the band adds some gorpcore extremeities, tacking elastic cords that run from a cinch closure at the heel through a “ZTMY” tag sat above the heel counter.
A concrete ZUTOMAYO ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 collection hasn’t come about just yet, but the band has already begun teasing the link-up via their social media profiles.
