Given the many arms of the Swoosh, the brand’s most important collaborator is always a contentious debate, but unquestionably Comme des Garçons deserves heavy consideration in chiseling out a current Mount Rushmore. The Japanese imprint is extremely reliable for delivering previews of upcoming Nike product at their various Fashion Week showcases, and one of their Summer 2024 previews raised eyebrows across the industry. The Comme des Garçons Nike Sense SP, reimagining the Air Max 96, now becomes clearer with official images surfacing.
True to the initial “leak” and their design language overall, three colorways are on tap for this make-up, spread across all-white, all-black and equally expected pink/white. While CDG’s understated aesthetic touch always inherently shifts focus onto the hardware, here the composition is all the more eye-catching. Spinning off the windowed, retro aesthetics of the Air Max 96 proper, with a far chunkier upper and a cloud-like sole unit underfoot, carrying dense geometric patterns as it delivers an extra cushioned ride.
As we asked in that initial coverage, it’s fair to wonder whether this is a signal that the Nike Air Max 96 will be creeping back into the mainline in the future. A few factors should inform our predictions in that regard, though — while it’s hard to match Supreme’s unfettered access to the Nike archive, CDG has scooped up silhouettes in the past completely disconnected to any retro plans (see their Air Carnivore in 2021). Additionally, perhaps this special make-up means we should discard any thoughts of the AM96 in general, set up as a new product entirely.
Regardless of the strategic intrigue at play, the Comme des Garçons Nike Sense SP remains one of the buzzier collabs between the long-time partners we’ve seen in a bit. Release info for the trio is currently unknown, but stick with our coverage and our Sneaker Release Dates hub for further info as it emerges.
