GATs Are Back: adidas To Release The BW Army Again On April 1st

adidas is dipping into its archive by bringing back the BW Army, re-introducing the German Army Trainer silhouette made trendy by Maison Margiela.

Let’s clear this up off the bat; anyone who calls the BW Army a Margiela Replica rip-off is sorely mistaken. The GAT design was commissioned by the German army in the 1970s, but it’s unclear whether adidas or PUMA was responsible for manufacturing the military-issued sneaker. As no one entity owns the GAT copyright, brands like adidas, Margiela, and countless others are free to produce their own versions (although they’re all basically the same thing).

Due in no small part to the success of the Margiela Replica, the adidas BW Army has returned in a handful of different styles since 2017 (including retailer-exclusive colorways by Size?). New black and white colorways are en route for summer, both of which lend vintage appeal through cracked leather. Additional shared features include debossed tongue branding, brown leather lining, and brown gum soles.

Both “Lux” adidas BW Armys aka “GATs” are slated to release in Europe on April 1st, retailing for $120 each. See official images below if you’ll be going for a pair.
