Matt Varga ASICS isn’t letting go of the rope anytime soon. In contrast to some of their rivals, the Japanese giant’s success within the throwback runner space isn’t siloed to just one silhouette. Though things may flow out from the GEL-Kayano 14, adjacent shoes like the GEL-1130, GEL-Cumulus 16, and GT-2160 have done well to keep up the performance of the ’08 design.
Tackling a price tier than its older sibling, the ASICS GT-2160 now tackles an all-over “Gravel” edition, doubling down on the Y2K aesthetics it already majors in. While metallic leather overlays add texture and depth to this edition, the all-grey atmosphere still shines through in the broadest strokes, accomplished with a steely mesh base layer.
