Nike’s strategy of re-issuing every old piece of equipment in its archive as contemporary women’s fashion lifestyle sneakers continues, but there’s a little more weight to this one. The Nike Moon Shoe, which is known as the first-ever sneaker in the brand’s history, is back on shelves for the first time in over a half-century. This piece of sneaker history will start its journey in the form of a designer collaboration with French design house Jacquemus.
Earning its nickname for the distinctive footprints left by the traction bottoms, the Moon Shoe first teased its return earlier this year when the sneaker appeared on the runway for the French design house. The same sock-like construction with nylon exteriors are back with what appears to be cinched ankles and the JACQUEMUS logo planted on the tongue label and pressed into the suede heel counter.
Meant to convey modern ballet aesthetics, this modified Moon Shoe is finished as a low-to-the-ground “torpedo” sneaker that reflects Jacquemus’ design philosophy with Nike’s sport heritage.
In addition to being an integral part of Nike history, the Moon Shoe gained notoriety for being a beast at auction as an original pair from 1971 sold for $437,500 at high-end luxury auction house Sotheby’s.
Three colorway options are expected to release. A global release date is currently unknown, although the MSRP is expected to be $180.
