Nike Almost Released A 25th Anniversary Foamposite In 2022

All of the hysteria surrounding Jordan Brand’s and the Nike Air Max 95’s anniversary years should solidify something that sneakerheads have known for quite some time: Beaverton loves a birthday. Given their cachet within collectors’ minds already, any given calendar year is prone to see some model or another in the spotlight. Given all of that, it’s rarer to see an iconic shoe shuffle in and out of a milestone without some form of celebration, but a “25th Anniversary” sample of the Foamposite casts into relief a moment where exactly that transpired.

Indeed, though the Penny Hardaway silhouette enjoyed the typical regalia in 2017 as it hit the two-decade mark, nary a peep was heard from the tanky model five years later in its “Silver” year. As this sample showcases, however, that’s not to say that Nike designers weren’t contemplating the issue. Kitted out in matte silver, navy, and black, the unreleased colorway at hand wears its jubilant air proudly and often; emblems on the insoles read “25 years of Foamposites,” with “1997-2022” text on tongue tags speaks to the same. If we’re to posit (no pun intended) a guess as to why this effort remained in the vault, it’s likely due to general fatigue with the silhouette, failing to truly see the breakout success during its 20th anniversary. Though resale performance isn’t the KPI that Nike holds closest to heart, seeing such a sentimental ode to a once-coveted model would’ve nonetheless been tough to swallow. Perhaps 2027 could bode better?
