Andrew Rizzo Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway had a shoe game like no other. The hybrid guard enjoyed four standout signature Nike Basketball models during his time with the Orlando Magic, then went on to lace up several different inline designs during his stints with Phoenix and New York — effectively dipping into two of Nike Basketball’s strongest eras across the late 1990s and mid-2000s.
Penny’s time with the Knicks was, in his own words, disappointing — the result of lingering injuries that sapped much of his athleticism. Still, his sneaker game remained elite. In 2004, Nike Basketball introduced the Air Zoom Huarache 2K4, designed by Eric Avar as a modernized evolution of the Air Trainer Huarache equipped with Zoom Air cushioning. The model was created primarily for Kobe Bryant, who served as its lead athlete before launching his own signature line, but Penny Hardaway and women’s hoops legend Sue Bird also championed the shoe. Now two decades and change later, Penny’s “Knicks” PE is set for a public release per Sneaker Market Romania.
The sneaker carries a “Black/Varsity Royal/Safety Orange” palette and is expected to closely replicate the pair Penny wore at Madison Square Garden in the 2000s (as shown above and below). No official images of the retro have surfaced yet, but updates should follow soon. The timing also coincides with news of the Kobe Bryant Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 “All-Star” returning, suggesting Nike is likely gearing up for a broader revival of the model.
