Matt Varga Of New Balance Numeric’s recent inventions, easily Andrew Reynolds’ New Balance 933 sits as the most highly-regarded, combining the LA skater’s history in skating with 99x design language for an immediate standout in the catalog. In the silhouette’s first few months on the shelves, largely the Boston brand has kept to its color team and Andrew’s own sensibilities, but its first collaboration is now on the horizon.
Mike Gigliotti, skater himself and founder of LA’s Lotties Skate Shop, brings his background as an artist for that debut link-up. Already minted in the footwear space by leading a SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration with Vans in 2021, his personal follow-up sticks to a far more neutral script, utilizing an earthy blend of tans, greens, and greys that should ring familiar for New Balance hardcores. Luxe geometric patterns land on the insoles in brighter, more vibrant fashion. And for good measure, this shared design isn’t a random match-up; Gigliotti’s artwork has been featured countless times on Baker Skateboards products. Or, to quote the man himself:
Probably like every skateboarder on earth, you grow up knowing who Andrew Reynolds and the Baker dudes are. I was a freshman in high school or eighth grader. Baker took over Los Angeles. The influence was so insane. Many, many years later, I had met Spanky and he was like, “Hey man, I’m getting more involved with the graphics at Baker if you’d want to do some art there.” I was like, “Of course, I would love to do that. ” And honestly, I think since 2014 it hasn’t stopped.
It’s definitely [a] childhood dream come true. So. when the idea came up to make a colorway and what would we want it to look like, Andrew really had taken a liking to a lot of the pottery my family makes. My mom ran a pottery studio for a very long time… I come from a family of a lot of artistic ability. I had done these watercolors of my sister and mom’s pottery, so that’s where a lot of the browns and tans and greens and stuff come from.
