For the Three Stripes ‘heads, there are few series more legendary than the adidas A-ZX. A sprawling collaborative lineage played out on the brand’s late ’80s and early ’90s cutting-edge runners, the program has picked back up for a “second chapter” beginning in 2020. However, as that effort rages on, adidas Consortium and Overkill are fast-forwarding to the end via a two-pack of adidas ZX8000 colorways.

For the uninitiated, even among the countless collaborative editions that line the A-ZX series, the original “Aqua” that began the ZX family in earnest, and a never-released yellow “Final A-ZX” are easily the most beloved and, as a result, coveted. adidas Consortium thus takes that alpha/omega concept into an archive-digging revival, paying homage to Jacques Chassaing and Markus Thaler, fathers of the running model as it touched down in 1989.

While the endpoint is revived faithfully, initially produced in minimal numbers (reportedly between 50 and 100), the OG “Aqua” gets some visual tinkering, adding a yellow midsole and presenting as an “Inverse” edition as a result. Additionally, the actual hardware underpinnings of either ZX 8000 pair here shift for the modern era, with Overkill promising “focus on the classic ZX shape,” despite a “more modern interpretation” of either composition.

The adidas Consortium ZX8000 in either colorway will release first-come, first-served at Overkill Berlin on January 17th for an exclusive pre-release. Quantities are expected to be quite limited for either colorway.
