Matt Varga The 35th year for any Jordan has become a recurrent storyline as we work through the 2020s, rising to a level of inescapability as the Air Jordan 5 celebrated, now in focus as the Air Jordan 6 does, and already looming for next year as the Air Jordan 7 will take center stage. Last decade, it was a run of silhouettes celebrating twenty-three years on the shelves that forced them into the spotlight, something the AJ7 crossed off in 2015, prompting OG pairs and new history-oriented editions to hit the public.
The Air Jordan 7 “Barcelona Nights” reinterpreted Jordan’s legendary career for a novel colorway, famously drawing from the 1992 Olympics in that titular venue, iconic even behind His Airness’ bounds as the dawn of the “Dream Team.” A decade-and-change later, a sample version of that shoe coming to light allows us a never-before-seen look into the sample process.
The shoe, depicted in the gallery below, shifts from the all-black uppers of the public pair for a more shimmering arrangement, pinning reflective dark teal on the overlays. Further, moving to the collar reveals inset collar panels that reflect the eccentric ’90s patterning usually restricted to the tongue, a meta touch that celebrates the Air Jordan 7‘s most lasting design cues. With this variation increasing the effect of the red and green trim, we immediately wonder whether the proximity to the “Marvin the Martian,” arriving later that year, may have prompted some tinkering before settling on what consumers actually saw on the shelves.
