The world’s attention is on the World Cup, a moment where sports fans’ gazes will be firmly affixed to the United States and its neighbors to the north and south for the international showcase. And yes, while celebrating what’s at hand remains a top-line priority for all, Nike is unexpectedly carving out an opportunity to look a few decades in the rear view.
For context, in 2016 Nike released the Air Trainer SC “Atlanta Olympics,” minted to commemorate 20 years since the IOC touched down in the A. Between embroidered peaches on the tongue and regal branding on the heels, the colorway was an instant hit, only accelerated by a limited run of 1,996 pairs (obviously tied to the 1996 games).
A decade later, we’ve uncovered images of a sequel effort, where Beaverton pans down in the logo, swapping out bright teal from the 2016 for bright, rich wine coloring. Between confetti coatings in the trim, 3M materiality that shines under light, and podium gold trim, much of this shoe operates as a refined palette swap. Beyond the primary coloring, another switch comes on the interior, where the insoles split into red/white/blue, finished with “96” text within a floral bouquet.
