Whether intentional or simply a product of how consumers follow the industry, it’s exceedingly rare for in-house sneaker designers to become known to the wider sneakerhead audience. Yet Greg Betty has been able to accomplish exactly that, giving the truly dedicated hobbyists walk-throughs on what inspired shoes he penned during his time at Vans. Though Jordan Brand now signs the NYC native’s checks, his penmanship is load-bearing in the California company’s current hot streak, with no signs of slowing down as we move through 2026.
Shortly after taking ownership for the Vans Old Skool 36 “Paint Splatter,” he similarly put his stamp on a new Vans Authentic, replete with distressed yarn quarter panels and spiked attachments. Seemingly first hitting the net with an in-hand unboxing video, the designer took to his own socials to do the same, flexing detail-oriented angles of the upcoming design.

Again, Mr. Betty is typically very transparent in walking through design inspirations and details as his releases near closer. Though we’re not able to exactly place what may have been on the moodboard for this pair, what’s immediately apparent is how this bucks the often delicate aesthetics of he and Vans’ foremost recent efforts like the “Charms” or “Pearlized.” Beyond the harsher material and accessory choices, an embrace of warmer tones on that quarter panel and jet black across the toe communicates a darker overall direction.
