Performance tennis doesn’t get much love in mainstream sneaker culture, but the Nike Vapor 12 Hypersmash has been earning its recent headline cameos. Last year delivered a red, white, and blue colorway inspired by the legendary Nike Hyperdunk “United We Rise” from the 2008 Olympics, a well-executed nod to a sneaker that’s tough to track down in earnest. Now the model is taking on a new style that traces back to a certified behemoth: Marty McFly’s legendary Nike Mag.
To call the Nike Mag a “grail” is an understatement. The “Back to the Future” shoe, which saw limited releases in 2011 and 2016, is more of a museum piece than an actual wearable, though we’re not entirely unaccustomed to seeing clout chasers rock pairs at NBA games and the like. The Vapor 12 Hypersmash here does its best possible Nike Mag impression, sporting a Photon Dust foundation with Sky Blue detailing. The heel clip sells the comparison most convincingly, appearing with white Nike branding and rainbow-colored paint splatter. The Vapor 12 Hypersmash itself draws from the original Nike Hyperdunk, which also received a Nike Mag-inspired “Marty McFly” colorway back in the day.
