Matt Varga As basketball fans, the moves that the Heat, Trail Blazers, Sixers, and Raptors have made have been absolutely electrifying, but we’ve had our eyes elsewhere on the transaction wire. Converse and Nike have recently shaken up the performance world with an intra-company shift: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, multi-time MVP winner and NBA champion, will be under the Swoosh rather than the Star as he plots future moves.
Of course, though the news itself is more than groundbreaking, it’ll take some time for us to see the Nike Shai 2, pending the usual latency with any major move in footwear. Yet it places some real premium on the remaining Converse SHAI 001 colorways, now known to be limited-time-only commodities before he joins the vaunted roster of Beaverton signees.
In the meantime, there’s still a runway for the Converse SHAI 001 to add to its legacy, not least of which is the mysterious lace-up version of the model. Back to the present, the focus remains on material experimentation, with the NBA playoffs serving as a launchpad for the “Premium” line, having added inky and silver leathers so far. Next up is the SHAI 001 “Slither,” making good on that serpentine title with desert snakeskin prints, breaking from completely one-note colorways but nonetheless aligning with the flooded treatments we’ve come to know and love.
