If Vans has anything to say about it, we’ll soon be talking about its “hot streak” as an era unto itself. Its Spring/Summer preview in Paris has already piqued our interest, revealing collaborations with Satoshi Nakamoto, Born & Raised, Imran Potato, and Lil Uzi Vert, fresh additions to the “Pearlized” and “Charms” series, and several new concepts, including gradient checkerboard Slip-Ons, Espadrille Old Skools, and “What The” takes on the checkerboard motif.
Back to the present day, though we’ve now moved past everything with designer Greg Betty’s name attached marking instant sell-outs, his transparency regarding his process in these modern releases and the overall spirit of boundless experimentation mean the California company is more relevant and needle-moving than ever. The latest dump by the now Jordan Brand creative surrounds the Vans “Field Pack,” now loaded onto the release calendar for mid-July.
Said by Betty to be inspired by both military uniforms and, on a personal level, his father’s own service, this “Field Pack” takeover hits the Half Cab, Old Skool, and Authentic. The Old Skool, with a new netting pattern on the sidewalls meant to be distressed to reveal further material underneath, provides a clear link to netted helmets from World War II, additionally tying to standard issue uniforms with the camouflage patterning throughout this capsule. Though perhaps more restrained aesthetically, the simplistic black and white variations link to combat boots and dog tags, including the accessorized toes of the Authentic that recall earlier Pearlized expressions.
As mentioned above, the Vans “Field Pack,” including the Half Cab Decon, Authentic, and Old Skool, is already scheduled for a July 16th release via Vans. The Half Cab and Authentic check in at $100, while the Old Skool retails at $115.
