With the VaporFly in 2017, Nike invented a new type of runner, the “super shoe,” and therefore set off an arms race for the most tech-filled, souped-up possible performance silhouette. That’s taken over the industry in the years since, as adidas, PUMA, HOKA, On, and recently, Reebok have pledged their own carbon-plated representatives to shave the minutes off of your PR. At this point, Nike’s AlphaFly line may just be their most visible, now setting off on a new track with the AlphaFly 4.
For those who checked in to the previous model, it’s immediately apparent that this is something of an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Rather than a ground-up reinvention, much of the tech and overall geometry of the AlphaFly 3 remains with the 4. The rocker and Air Zoom units appear to be nudged forward incrementally, the cut-outs around the Air are extended, and these will likely be a bit lighter given some trim to the overall foam package. In fact, it’s there that houses the biggest advancement for this shoe, as the ZoomX turns into a ZoomX and ZoomX LT combination. “Atomknit” materiality in the upper returns, as does a Flyplate underfoot; overall, Nike positions this as a shoe with the trademark AlphaFly performance, yet with a subtly lighter and quieter edge.
The Nike Alphafly 4 is expected to hit Nike.com soon, retailing for $275. Women’s and men’s pairs will be on tap once that comes to pass.
