And while modern retros that hew closely to their original counterparts, whether in shape, branding, or color, are generally considered the most “true” by most definitions, it’s worth asking: do we really want every retro to be that faithful?
For collectors, part of the fun has always been obsessing over details most casual wearers would never notice. Subtle changes to shape, materials, branding, or construction can turn an otherwise familiar retro into something far more distinct. Those are the kinds of differences that fueled countless NikeTalk threads and continue to drive debate among collectors today, amplified every time an original colorway is announced for a return.

Perhaps the strongest argument for differences in retro releases is the Air Jordan 7 “Playoffs” aka “Raptors,” an original colorway from 1992 worn by Michael Jordan on his quest for a second NBA title. Its first retro in 2002 marked a rare case of a reissue proving arguably more sought-after than the original. Jordan Brand dialed up the saturation of the red and purple, earning the shoe its unofficial “Raptors” nickname. That connection served as a major selling point as people plotted outfits around Raptors jerseys and fitted ball caps, essentially the street uniform of the era. Funny side note: the Raptors were barely an idea when the original “Playoffs” 7s dropped in 1992.

With the “Playoffs” 7s returning for their fifth total release in 2027, sneaker collector and leaker @rache1_nguyen has taken to Instagram with side-by-side pics of every pair to date, illustrating the differences between each. The 2002 is obviously the most consequential, swapping in brighter accent colors and a darker upper. The 2009 “DMP” edition saw a return to grey and black up top, while the 2012 edition reverted once again to all black. Keeping that pattern going while also nodding back to 1992, the upcoming 2027 retro features a black and grey upper with slightly dimmer purple accents, watering down the “Raptors” comparison with a return to original shading.
