Andrew Rizzo It’s only fitting that the 2026-27 college basketball PE season tips off with MJ’s alma mater. Right out of the gate, the UNC Tar Heels are already lapping the competition with a stunning Air Jordan 12 that introduces a surprising material to the silhouette for the first time.
The Air Jordan 12 “UNC” PE features an all-denim construction, pairing a light-wash blue across the model’s signature pleated panels with a medium-wash mudguard. Tar Heels branding appears on the tongue and spine, while gold hardware and contrast stitching round out the premium treatment. By our count, the Air Jordan 12 has never featured denim in any capacity, making this a particularly rare entry in the model’s history.
In recent years, Jordan Brand has largely outfitted its sponsored college programs with variations on shared designs, differentiated by school-specific colorways. UNC, however, has always occupied a unique place in the Jumpman family thanks to the MJ legacy. Whether other schools will receive their own denim AJ12s remains to be seen.
