Nike Quietly Brought Back This Popular Retro Hiking Shoe

Great call.

Nike Quietly Brought Back This Popular Retro Hiking Shoe

Word to Wale, Nike boots are back in vogue. The past few winters have brought nothing but bangers from the Nike ACG archive, from the Torre and Baltoro to new life breathed into the Goadome and much more. Now once again reading the moment correctly, the Beaverton brand has brought back a model whose roots trace all the way back to the advent of its outdoor sub-brand.

In 1989, Nike ACG debuted the Lahar Escape, a heavy-duty, high-top hiking boot distinguished by its militaristic “Lahar” tongue branding (which would later inspire an Air Max 90 pack in the 2000s). Fast forward to 2021, and Nike introduced the Lahar Low for women, a comprehensive overhaul that retained the rugged aesthetic while shifting its focus toward lifestyle wear. It proved popular during its short-lived run, with many colorways selling out before going on to command two to three times retail on the aftermarket. Now it’s back at a time when its potential feels even greater.

Slotting neatly into a boot aesthetic currently headlined by names like Diemme, Paraboot, Danner, and ROA to name a few, the Lahar Low delivers on-trend cues with metal eyelets, rope laces, and a clean suede upper with minimal branding, carried solely by mini Swooshes on the lateral side. While the intent is firmly lifestyle, a rugged hiking sole unit makes the Lahar Low more than capable of handling whatever off-trail or winter conditions you might encounter.

Nike’s been clowned on enough for its questionable decision-making in recent years. Based on everything we’re seeing, bringing the Lahar Low back seems like a good call. Props where they’re due.

The Nike Lahar Low is available now via Nike in two colorways, Black and Cacao Wow. The model remains a women’s exclusive, though the Black pair comes in extended sizing up to a W 16.5 / M 15. Retail is set at $140 per pair. See our Where to Buy sections below for purchase links.
