Obscure Air Max shoes from the late 1990s and 2000s have informed a sizable chunk of new and upcoming Nike releases, be it through full-on revivals like the Air Max Sunder and Air Max TL 2.5 or vague allusions to original colorways. Harkening back to the turn of the century once more, the Beaverton brand is releasing an Air Max 90 inspired by 1999’s Air Tuned Max.
Taking note from that model’s original “Celery” colorway, the shoe comes with iridescent “Dark Russet” overlays atop a ballistic black mesh base. The tongue tag and lower eyestay boast a similar yet slightly more green-dominant finish, while the entire backtab comes painted in black in lieu of contrast branding. A brown gum mudguard window paves a transition underfoot, where a black midsole and gum outsole polish off the delivery.
The Air Tuned Max “Celery” came back in retro form in 2021, but chances are most sneakerheads recognize the makeup from Skepta’s 2017 Air Max 97 collaboration; that shoe inspired by both the Air Tuned Max and the natural color palette of Morocco. Needless to say, the likeminded Air Max 90 oozes a similar sense of nostalgia.
Shown here via official retailer images, the Air Max 90 “Celery” aka “Dark Russet” releases October 15th for $140. Scroll through the full gallery below and turn to our “Where To Buy” section for purchase links on that date.
