Throughout the esteemed legacy of the Air Jordan 1 – one of the most important pieces of footwear in the history of the sneaker industry – the model’s OG color schemes have tended to levitate toward the top of the silhouette’s eminent pantheon. Colorways the likes of the “Chicago”, the “Bred”, and the “Royal” are just three examples of this, but after those 1985 colors, there have also been a number of non-OGs that have been able to make a serious names for themselves. Inspired by an orange and black uniform MJ wore in an Italian exhibition game in 1986 in which he shattered a backboard while throwing down a hellacious dunk, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Shattered Backboard” from 2015 is inarguably one of the more revered new-age Jordan 1s of all time.
In fact this same model became the inspiration for two other releases, the “Reverse Shattered Backboards” from 2016 and the “Satin Shattered Backboards” from earlier this year. Often considered to be equipped with the softest leather in the history of the AJ1, its sail-colored underlays beautifully combine with its black and orange overlays for a cant-miss Jordan 1 aesthetic. Now, almost four years removed from the original drop, it is being reported that a third rendition of the iconic creation is in production, aptly dubbed the “Shattered Backboard 3.0”. No actual photos of the sneaker have been shared yet, but its color code points out the inclusion of Black, Pale Vanilla, and Starfish – three hues that work perfectly together to capture the Shattered Backboard aesthetic. While not much else is known at the moment, this is certainly welcome news, and if true, the third take on this iconic piece of Jumpman lore will certainly be one of next year’s must-have drops.
Updated 1/3/19: Currently, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Shattered Backboard 3.0” is rumored to release on October 26th, 2019.
