What began as a side-project of Nike’s back in the 1970s has evolved into the proper All Conditions Gear (ACG) sub-category, which rivals the extent and impact of some moderately-sized sportswear brands. And while the subsidiary line continues to look forward in regards to innovation for the outdoors – like with its new Air Terra Antarktik – recent years has seen the ACG range of products be divided between ultra-futuristic offerings and options that harken back to less overtly technical, vintage stylings. Of the latter, the bearded “Hike Nike Man” who graced branded apparel from previous decades has resurfaced on a slew of swoosh-branded models like the React Element 55 and Air Force 1, bringing along with him color schemes and details borrowed from ACG’s rich heritage. The newest outdoors-inspired AF1 features “Watermelon”-colored suede panels at the forefoot and midfoot while donning a drab mix of brown and yellow at its ripstop nylon/leather rear construction. Profile swooshes contrast their warped counterparts at the tongue and heel, but still favor an equally-muted white hue. Just like on the pair worn by the included Hike Nike Man hangtag, bottoms on this ’82 classic consist of a “Khaki”-colored midsole given traction by a blacked-out outsole.
