Nike Total Griffey Max ’99 – Spring 2012 Releases
January 10th, 2012 by John K. | 6 comments

The power presence of the Nike Griffey Retro line continues in 2012 with the release of the Nike Total Griffey Max ’99. After being left out in 2010, a Nike Griffey shoe returned to the Sneaker News Top 30 year-end list, with the OG ‘Emerald’ colorway earning a spot among the thirty best releases of the year. Does the Total Griffey Max ’99 have that same power? While the ’99 doesn’t strike that nostalgic chord like the Air Griffey Max 1 or 2 does, the Total Griffey should still be one to watch out for when the first Black/Red colorway drops on February the 8th, followed by the White/Blue/Green on March the 7th (both retailing at $150). Check out angles of both below and let us know which of the two upcoming releases has you stoked!

That shit is fire. I just got those and I love them
Aside from J's and a few select hoop kicks I collect nothing but Griffeys dating back to '95. That year was when he first got his signature shoe, the Diamond Furys (Griffey did wear the Air Trainer Max the year prior, though). These '99 retros are not up to par with the OG, both with the leather quality, the ankle "saw wave" (OG was TPU, this is a mesh-fill overlay). Furthermore, the midsole/outsole/air max from the OG version - that outsole was also used in the GD I's, by the way - was replaced with the midsole/outsole used in the GD II's (for visual reference: http://images.sneakernews.com/wp-content/uploads/.... Of course, with any Retro release comes changes due to various feedback, material supply/availability, and of course, the bottom line. I think the overall changes with this retro is the latter - given that it has been 13yrs since seeing this shoe and the first retro of this model, it's unfortunate to have the Air Griffey Max '99 get this treatment. Hopefully future iterations get better, as this, me being a Griffey sneakerhead and fan, feels more like a hybrid - a la Nike Swingman Remix, Nike Air Max Jr., and the Nike Griffey Fury (releasing w/in next few days) - and with lesser quality. My personal favorite was the FootAction-Exclusive colorway - the White/Obsidian/Silver (I still rock em to this day in my rotation); hopefully that colorway does release and it gets the OG treatment with the better quality and OG outsoles, but it'd be a stretch. But, to each their own of course. My bad for the long "comment".. lol, but I hope this insight and feedback helps anyone looking for info on these kicks.
...used to work-out in a pair of these Good all-around trainer.
