It was just about seven years ago that the release of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou had hipsters from all around trying to get their hands on the classic Rom lowtop depicted as part of the seafaring crew’s uniform. Just goes to show how far adidas Originals has come recently when it comes to the breadth of their classic lineup, and though the Rom remains in the Three Stripes vaults for now, they’re bringing back some even more obscure models to compliment a crisp white and green perforated Rod Laver. Models like the adidas Originals Malmo, Orion and Kopenhagen are central to continuing the Size?-exclusive ‘Adi’s Archive’ collection into 2012, and you can see a sampling of what’s in store for next year after the jump below. adidas Originals tends to rely less upon official release dates than Nike Sportswear, but here’s a case when a whole heap of new Three Stripes classics have come available at once. When you’ve got a collection like this that runs the gamut of a brand’s heritage models, it can be hard to pick a standout model, so we’ll just start at the bottom of the list (in alphabetical order, that is) with a new adidas ZX500 in a colorway that would have been right at home in Philly around the model’s 1984 debut. That rounds out the running category, but there are plenty more lowtops thanks to a duo of Gazelle IIs plus one Gazelle OG, the immortal Rod Laver and Stan Smith, and one pair of Campuses. Rounding out the group are two newer designs, both lifestyle oriented midtops with basketball inspiration in the adiRise Mid and Roundouse Mid. Some sneakerheads value a balanced sneaker rotation, whether it be the particular style of the shoe, or more importantly, the brand. Guys like Jordan Geller, curator of the ShoeZeum, is devoted solely to Nike and Jordan Brand, but others don’t mind branching out beyond the swoosh. The three stripes is one popular choice among sneakerheads who like to dabble in a bit of everything, and the upcoming adidas Originals Fall/Winter 2011 releases should give you some ideas for upcoming sneaker pick-ups. All of the previewed selections below carry a ‘lux’ motif, like the Superstar II in the heather grey and denim, or the two Honey Mids in the funky patterns. Zebra print is on our radar as one of spring’s microtrends, but before we saw Vans jump on the bandwagon, Sneaker News previewed this new adidas Original Stan Smith 80s back in November. They’re finally ready to hit retail right at the end of the spring 2011 fashion season and in these new photos it’s clear they deserve the ‘Zebra Lux’ moniker. These joints are crafted almost entirely in neatly trimmed, striped pony hair, a white contrast stitch affixing their black sole while white D-ring eyelets hold black laces in place. The collaboration between adidas and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto is among the longest running and most prolific in the history of sneakers. The adidas Y-3 capsule has been bringing you super-sleek progressive designs for years now, 10 to be exact, and with a decade in the books it’s time for some celebratin’. Here’s a look at the adidas Y-3 10th Anniversary collection for spring/summer 2011, a set of forward thinking designs that’s limited to 300 per pair. Animal prints have played a significant role in adidas spring 2011 footwear collection, and while the patent leather leopard sections only make up a small percentage of the surface area, it’s critical to this latest look from Kazuki Kuarishi. Created in conjunction with Japanese accessory makers JAM HOME MADE, the Kazuki x adidas Originals design pictured above is based on the immortal Stan Smith but adds the heel and tongue straps that have typified the KZK collabos. It’s worth noting that while the black pair retains the ‘EYELET’ gold lettering on its side panels, this forward and backward print is conspicuously absent on the whtie ones.
