Andrew Rizzo The most recognizable tennis shoe in history is getting a bold new spinoff. adidas is giving the iconic Stan Smith a retooling that moves the tennis classic from the court into the realm of formalwear and ballet shoes, delivering an all-new silhouette defined by a square toe.
The ongoing blend between formal and streetwear, particularly as it pertains to sneakers, has been well documented, and adidas hasn’t been shy about reimagining its Originals to fit modern molds. The Stan Smith alone offers plenty of examples, namely the low-profile Stan Smith Lo Pro and Stan Smith Lo Ballet. Other sportswear brands have gone down this path as well, namely Nike with the Martine Rose Shox MR4 Mule and Converse with the Chuck 70 De Luxe Squared.
Most familiar Stan Smith hallmarks remain intact here, including the perforated stripes, Stan Smith tongue branding, and trefoil logos on the backtab, all rendered in the model’s original and quintessential white and green colorway. The lone difference is the structure, the toe molded into a squared-off shape with the outsole altered to match.
