A particular PE worn by a star player has always been a more interesting story than uniformity from a team across the board, right? Most notable on-feet stories regarding colorway selections have had to do with an individual’s preference or an individual having his signature banned (see early MJ and his “Banned” 1s or the upcoming “Sharpie” Foams from Penny Hardaway). But that could be changing thanks to the current updates in the new Atlanta Hawks uniform set.
The vibrant splash of Volt Green is slated to be featured on each player’s shoelaces, despite numerous guys on their roster representing different brands. Jeff Teague is signed to adidas, and guys like Kyle Korver and Al Horford both represent the Swoosh. Even Kent Bazemore is an Under Armour signee. Hawks chief creative officer Peter Sorckoff looked at the University Oregon’s established process of allowing players to have a say in the uniform selections in an effort to increase team unity.
Sorckoff told ESPN in regards to hyper-specific detailing throughout the latest team makeover, “I asked them, ‘Are you going to be OK wearing a certain sock? I might even ask you to wear a certain lace color. While that doesn’t mean losing your individuality, it can mean giving up some for the greater good.”
Does that mean that the days of player exclusives are over in Atlanta? It might fit in with their culture, as the entire starting 5 won the Eastern Conference’s Player of the Month Award last January. It will be interesting to see how competing brands in Under Armour, adidas, and Nike respond. Looks like the matching shoelaces were in full effect during the unveiling earlier today as well despite Korver, Teague, and Bazemore all represented by different brands.
