Michael Le Going on 10 years of Gyakusou, Jun Takahashi and Nike are ushering in their forthcoming Spring/Summer ’19 range, including apparel that imbue informed design as well as earth-toned themed colorways of the Vaporfly 4% and Pegasus Turbo. With running lying at the core of the collaboration’s ethos, the designer wanted to tackle an inspiration unlike most, toting the exercise as more of a meditative experience fit for running monks and those who prefer a backwards step. Outerwear maintains the lightweight construction found in previous collections, featuring a packable “Transform JKT” as well as a “Lightweight JKT” that uses skin temperature maps for mindful ventilation. Sets of compression tights extend that innovative approach, though what may be the most impressive is Takahashi’s fusion of Nike’s running silhouettes with his own sense of aesthetics.
Summing up to three upcoming footwear kits, the Vaporfly 4% gets hit in a deep burgundy knit alongside two Pegasus Turbos that arrive in diverse variations of a Yellow/Green palette. The aforementioned knit runner expresses a solid command over tone, as shades dip and dive throughout the spectrum as it makes its way through the woven upper. “GYAKUSOU” font is embedded on the ankle ribbing as well as the aglets, though the Pegasus opts instead for one overt branding hit along the vamp’s separating stripe. Though somewhat minimal in his rework, Takahashi has utilized a connecting palette throughout, ensuring each model is not too unlike the next.
