Once promoted as the “‘ultimate race day shoe,'” the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon Cage 2 is following-up its Stussy collaboration with two pairs closer-to-OG-form. Joining the Zoom Spiridon Cage Varsity Red on April 13th is a subtle “Metallic Silver” option.
Designed by Steven Smith, who’s currently at adidas Yeezy, the Caged Zoom Spiridon screams “retro trainer” while simultaneously being fit for the future. The silhouette’s low-trim and overall shape were inspired by the Porsche 935 from 1978. Breathable mesh and synthetic overlays throughout are clad in “Light Smoke Grey” and reminiscent of the original Air Max 97. Coincidentally, both models nod to Japan, with the Spiridon created in 2003 with the intention of being exclusive to “The Land of the Rising Sun.” Yet, as impressive as the aforementioned performance features were 17 years ago (and still are), they’re arguably overshadowed by the “caged” Zoom cushioning at the heel. Black and red at the exposed Air unit interrupt the era-appropriate silver that dominates this pair. Phylite midsoles deliver a neutral composition, but their accompanying tread further dabble in the fan-favorite, two-tone arrangement.
