As the Air Max 270 React can obviously attest, Nike often likes to color outside the lines of their original template, bringing in new and transformative upgrades to their classics. We’ve seen the approach on the Air Jordan 1 Flyease as well as the Daybreak Type, but out of many of the brand’s silhouettes, the Air Max 720 has received the brunt of their creativity. Now — likely following the equally futuristic Air Max 2090 — the model is undergoing the knife for its Utility variant. While the tooling itself supports in the same full-length manner, the upper is given a look far sleeker thanks to its minimal approach.
Seen in two different colorways, the styling borders between understated and somewhat loud — the latter achieving its look by way of bright blue heel counters and a more aggressive use of textured materials. Swooshes, which arrive dotted no matter which scheme, highlight with brighter or darker shades depending on its backdrop of choice. And while much of the construction appears seamless, it creates overt separations both at its heel as well as along the edge of its lace unit. This is more apparent on the white variant whose strips detail from the profile to the vamp and around to the medial in Sail coloring. Finished by classic Air Max branding at the heel, the pair makes for a perfect complement to the original 720’s more brutalist aesthetic.
