Update: Nike By You Dunk Low Is Available Now

Nike is sending the Dunk into overdrive in 2021, dropping several college-style colorways in January alone. Considering the insatiable demand for the resurgent silhouette, there will, without question, be a sea of Ls waiting after the January 14th release, but Nike is offering up a consolation prize – the Dunk Low on the customizable Nike By You platform. This is an obvious boon for Dunk fanatics who just can’t get their fill, but before you go crazy and make your own dream color combos here, there are some restrictions that will make the Nike By You Dunk Low a tad disappointing.

What we do like is the choice of materials. The smooth leather from the aforementioned college colorways will be available in a near-full rainbow of colorways, while a selection of suedes will also be up for grabs (hopefully they’re similar to the Ugly Dunkling quality). A third pebbled leather will also be available should you choose to mix things up. The shape of the Dunk Low is still to be determined, but if it’s anything like the 2020 drops, there’s much to be celebrated because the previous execution of the Dunk Low/High iD was, quite frankly, horrible.

The biggest disappointment here is the color-blocking capability. What makes the Dunk such a standout is the two-toned look at the toe-box and the ankle collar, but Nike has restricted users from mimicking the Syracuse, St. John’s, and any other college-style mix. This newer style of color-blocking was heavily introduced by Nike in the mid-2000s when the Dunk became available at mall chain stores such as Journey’s, and this proliferation of simply bad colorways is when the Dunk simply died out.

The inability to recreate exact classics, however, is standard practice for Nike iD/By You, so it’s not entirely surprising. And that doesn’t mean you can’t make good colorways. We just chose this haphazard mash of colors just to display the breadth of color-blocking options. But, prove us wrong by building your design here, and sharing with us on social media.

The Nike By You Dunk Low is priced at $120 and is currently listed as “Coming Soon” with a potential release marked for January 7th. We’ll update you the moment these become available.
