Within the U.S., Mizuno doesn’t boast the mainstream popularity of other sportswear brands, but it’s been producing quality products that’ve been praised in its native Japan since 1906. While newer in its storied catalog, the Contender S has been lauded by savvy consumers, and asked for in retro styles since 1995. Soon, the runner will return in “Indigo” and “Bleached” colorways.
Introduced around the debut of the brand’s Mondo Control, the Contender S delivers a lightweight, neutral ride without sacrificing durability. A combination of mesh, synthetic leather and suede appeared on the original proposition, whereas Mizuno Sportstyle’s reissue modernizes the pairs’ uppers with high-quality mesh and suede. Both forthcoming options indulge in a light grey base overlaid with contrasting panels. Elsewhere, the once-archival design features a single density compression-molded EVA foam boasting the Japanese institution’s Transpower technology in the heel; the insert delivers shock absorption and extra cushioning. Underfoot, a new one-piece solid rubber joins the 26-year-old design, proffering forefoot flex grooves allowing for a smoother transition from heel to toe.
Enjoy closer looks at each Contender S here below, and expect pairs to hit select retailers on March 11th.
