With fashion being a form of self-expression, the line between fashion and art is more blurred than ever—perhaps there wasn’t a line to even begin with. Conversely, it is not surprising for footwear brands to collaborate with artists nor channel graphics and patterns inspired by various art genres. Even the basketball silhouette that is the Nike KD 14 is taking cues from the Surrealist movement for a new, whimsical offering.
Kevin Durant‘s signature shoe gets artsy in a soothing green lace-like mesh that features graphics reminiscent of the works of artists such as Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo. The black, detailed drawings exhibit distorted faces and other objects that represent an altered reality. To match the uppers, the midfoot strap, midsole piece, and outsole are in the aforementioned light green. This green is paired with burgundy for a muted look, in which the red hue is applied to the tongue, laces, and branding on the strap. Textile featuring a pattern of grooves is found on the heel, rounding out the surrealist design.
