While decades removed from Bruce Kilgore’s vision, the Nike Air Force 1 Pixel is just one example of the sneaker’s dissatisfaction with simply resting on its laurels. Recently, the women’s-exclusive, modified design will land in a near-tonal “Amethyst Ash” style.
Inspired by the digital world of video games, the Air Force 1‘s “Pixel” iteration boasts a rearranged layout across its suede upper, as well as an exaggerated sole unit underfoot. Together, these components deliver new life to Kilgore’s 40-year-old creation, which was originally prepped for the outdoor game of basketball. The pixelated bits seen throughout NBA2K22, Minecraft and other virtual platforms, however, share a connection with the number of block and playful detailing on the women’s offering: branding on the top of the tongue and heel is reworked to fit into a pixel’s traditional shape, while midsole and tread components are given a “glitch”-reminiscent aesthetic.
