Jovani Hernandez Although some of today’s most important tastemakers have helped New Balance garner unprecedented attention over the last three years, the Boston-based brand has endured the test of time on its own merits. The “Refined Future” collection (widely known as the “Protection Pack”) that dropped in August 2021 and featured three New Balance 2002R colorways proved just that. As spring inches closer, the century-old company has unveiled more styles from the celebrated capsule.
Launched as a solo-effort and led by designer Yue Wu, the “Refined Future” lineup has gone on to top wish-lists among countless sneaker collectors. The three-pair collection demonstrated that high-quality craftsmanship and a well-thought-out execution trumps any limited stock quantity or high-profile collaboration, as the shoes immediately sold out. What’s been proven more impressive, however, is the 2002R trio’s winning over of first-time New Balance consumers. The premium pig suede, ultra-comfortable NERGY cushioning and “vintage” aesthetic worked in-tandem to create a present-day “relic,” which was Wu’s goal with the capsule. In addition to upcoming heritage-inspired “Steel Blue” and “Dark Navy” colorways, the “Refined Future” options prepped for 2022 include a bold “Vintage Orange” pair reminiscent of Salehe Bembury‘s own 2002R from October 2020. Underfoot, sole units indulge in a simple arrangement that allows the upper to steal the spotlight.
A stateside NewBalance.com launch date hasn’t been disclosed by the company just yet, but handfuls of shops across Europe and Asia are dropping their pairs on April 1st. In any case, enjoy product shots of the shoes ahead, courtesy of Germany’s AFEW boutique.
