Michael Le Though once reviled, graffiti has since become a well-appreciated art form, whose most legendary names are now nothing short of world-renowned. FAUST, based here in New York, is among one of the city’s most revered — and soon, his signature, calligraphic style will dress the equally iconic Nike SB Dunk High.
Here, Nike SB exchanges FAUST’s usual tools for embroidery. And despite the difference in approach, the artist perfectly translates the feel of prior works, dressing both the sides and insoles with script. The gilded text along the side even emulates paint drips, as threads hang from every line. And while the words opposite may blend into the colorway with its black embellishment, the laces and socklinerare accented with additional hits of gold.
As for the construction itself, the Dunk High is rendered entirely in neutrals. Black tumbled leathers are overlaid throughout, while suedes dress underneath, proffering a slightly darker shade. The midsole, tongue, and lining are similarly bereft of color, allowing FAUST’s touch to stand out.
