The Sustainably-Minded Proto Collective Unveils Their First Sneaker

As corporations and businesses strive to enact sustainable practices within their productions, a newly formed collective has its sights set on becoming the industry standard for manufacturing footwear and apparel in an overtly ecological manner. Comprised of industry stakeholders including the likes of Melody Ehsani, Jeff Staple and others, the Proto Collective was founded in 2020 and now they are ready to release their first sneaker, the Iris.

Constructed with a 98% recycled knit upper that derives its yarn from the Shima Seiki’s knitting machines, a flurry of sustainable practices is employed within the culturally innovative Los Angeles-made model. Requiring only a fraction of the amount of glues and adhesives typically necessary for industry-standard constructions, Blumaka-designed insoles provide a cushioned ride while saving 99% of water consumption through its foam-waste program alongside a VIBRAM-crafted cupsole and woven PET yarn Wincord laces. Stitched in a monochromatic ensemble above with an onslaught of black and white hues, a vibrant red shade fills the insoles of the relatively straightforward yet earth-friendly design.

Set to arrive at protocollective.com for a retail price of $320, in the meantime enjoy official imagery of the Proto Collective The Iris below.

In the realm of upcoming silhouettes, check out where to buy the Nike Air Max 1 “Mica Green” ahead of its release tomorrow, April 14th.
