The New Balance 998 has been reintegrated into the MADE in USA collection without a hitch, delivering a handful of compelling styles to longtime and new fans alike. As the silhouette continues to celebrate its 30th anniversary, it’s exploring more ensembles. The latest?: A classic navy option.
The muted blue hue isn’t new to the New Balance lineup, but recent years have seen the color pop up sparingly on the brand’s marquee designs. The FuelCell-cushioned NB 990v6 included the tone in its release catalog early on. A navy New Balance 998, then, makes perfect sense given the model’s moment in the spotlight courtesy of Teddy Santis and team.
Back in May, the New England stalwart unveiled a “Grey/Silver” style of the offering from 1993. Although the color scheme was unsurprising given how important grayscale finishes have been to the company, the offering cemented a distinction amongst the brand’s lineup of products. Aimé Leon Dore‘s frontman has been at the helm of the New Balance MADE in USA platform since April 2021, overhauling the initiative with the “Santis Touch.” May’s pair – like the upcoming navy New Balance 998 – was marketed as part of the “Core” line; while still manufactured in the United States of America, the sneaker doesn’t feature any overt nod to its domestic construction. Sockliners also include “New Balance Classic” branding instead of the stylistically-elevated logos on Santis’ MADE in USA collections.
A stateside newbalance.com launch date hasn’t been disclosed by the brand as of this writing, but the navy 998 is currently available at select overseas shops. The pair is priced at $185 USD.
