Patta x Nike Running Team Collection Launches On April 26th

Updated April 15th, 2024: Patta has officially announced a release date for their collaborative Nike Running Team collection. In addition to their Air Huarache Plus x Pegasus hybrid shoe, a full assortment of apparel will also release alongside on April 26th on patta.nl and May 2nd on SNKRS.

Updated December 21st, 2023: Patta’s next project with Nike has been revealed through official images. The silhouette is loose re-issue of 1993’s Air Huarache Plus, a shoe that has yet to retro. However, it will arrive with modern sole tooling seen on the current Air Pegasus 40 running model.

The original Air Huarache Plus was designed by Tinker Hatfield and was launched in 1993. It was based off the principles of the Air Huarache running shoe from years prior, featuring a foot-hugging neoprene interior bootie. The Air Huarache Plus featured a more rugged sole design, a distinct web-like exterior, and a mid-foot strap that crossed the ankle.

Patta’s take on an Air Huarache Plus Retro opts for a contemporary look and feel as it utilizes the Zoom-cushioned Air Pegasus 40 sole. While it may perform better than its much-older original, this choice in design was likely made to keep costs down. In any case, see the official images of two upcoming colorways ahead and stay tuned for a release in Spring 2024.

Patta and Nike can do no wrong. Since the 2000s, the duo has reimagined several heritage running models. Recently, pictures of an unconfirmed sample have surfaced via social media, suggesting the partnership will bring forth a project under the “Nike Air Huarache” banner.

Lover of all-things-Air Max, Amsterdam’s Patta has opted for lifestyle makeovers of Tinker Hatfield’s iconic silhouette from 1987. In recent history, however, the label has promoted its Patta Running Team more, aiming to encourage close friends and followers from afar to exercise and challenge themselves. Co-founder Edson Sabajo has led the initiative since 2010, which admits to not placing so much emphasis on fast finishes as it does “having fun.”

At quick glance, the newly-surfaced Patta-branded shoe resembles Nike’s Air Huarache Trainer 94, a classic design that hasn’t seen to much retro action since its debut, but is actually directly borrowed from the Air Huarache Plus. Mesh and neoprene construction divvy up base layers while a series of leather panels are overlaid atop the lighter and more breathable materials. Lockdown straps connect medial and lateral sides, indulging in a punchy pink that would fit in perfect with Hatfield’s Air Huarache designs of the ’90s. A special, never-before-seen “By Patta” emblem replaces traditional branding on the top of the tongue, introducing a red-colored “X” and black panther graphic as well. Pull tabs at the heel also enjoy retro flair, but components underfoot fast-forward to the modern age. Interestingly enough, the midsole and outsole setup is directly borrowed from the Pegasus 40 running shoe. A beloved daily trainer, the sneaker has emerged in dozens of styles over the past year. Soon enough, however, it’ll be replaced Nike’s Pegasus 41, which is rumored to deliver a visual and technology update to the running line. If the sample is genuine, it’s strange that Patta would use “old” tooling. Then again, it’s possible the shoe was part of a scrapped project originally intended for 2023.

Enjoy in-hand photography of the pair ahead. If the shoe – or something similar – releases, it’ll likely hit the Nike SNKRS app before Summer 2024.
