Jovani Hernandez New Balance is the latest brand to unveil footwear for the Lunar New Year, reimagining the relatively-novel New Balance 1906U in two festive colorways.
Having already been linked to a collaboration with INVINCIBLE and N.HOOLYWOOD, the NB 1906U seems poised to take over 2024. The latest variation in the revived NB 1906R’s catalog, the offshoot delivers a “utility”-inspired aesthetic (hence the “U” in its name instead of “R”). Performance-running heritage is present on the shoe, but breathable mesh bases are replaced with rip-stop textile on the Lunar New Year offerings; other styles of the newly-surfaced update opt for nylon builds. A plethora of synthetic overlays covers the upper, sharing real estate with a number of translucent details that don’t appear on the standard New Balance 1906R. The changes liken the sneaker to other technical footwear that’s taken over certain segments of the market over the last two years, while also delivering a refreshing aesthetic amongst New Balance’s designs.
Below, the New Balance 1906U keeps the NB 860v2’s sole unit intact. Pink and off white flair from the festive collection take over select components across the pairs’ bottom-halves, complementing their respective uppers. Jade-colored sockliners appear on both pairs in honor of the impending “Year of the Dragon” celebration. According to Confucius, jade (玉) is associated to the virtues of benevolence, fairness, and authenticity, As a final special touch, “NB” logos on the insoles are embroidered instead of printed on.
